Korea and Turkey: Close Friends and Emerging Global Powers
Erdogan Iscan, Ambassador of Turkey to Korea
Friendship develops into “blood-brotherhood”
Korea and Turkey are among the emerging global powers and they continue to develop bilateral cooperation in many areas with the support of their historical friendship.
Let us start with the developing bilateral cooperation. The deep-rooted and long-standing friendly relations throughout history between the two nations have transformed into “blood-brotherhood” following the participation of the Turkish troops in the Korean War. Today we remember not only the valour of our soldiers who fought to secure the blessing of freedom and democracy on the Korean peninsula, but also the exemplary social responsibility shown by the Turkish soldiers. The Turkish troops first provided protection to the Korean children who had lost their families under the tragic war circumstances. They later established a school (Ankara School) to provide preliminary education for those children. The Ankara School lasted for long years even after the end of the war. Today we maintain contacts with the graduates of the Ankara School who have contributed to the development of Korea in the post-war era.
